« Relax in the private jacuzzi and dine by candlelight, in the footsteps of Richelieu, close to La Rochelle »

Description of the establishment

You'll feel at home in this fine residence covered in Virginia creeper in the Marais Poitevin near La Rochelle et the île de Ré. The cosy rooms and suites with 19th century furniture reflect the warmth of the large family houses in the countryside. Built on the ruins of an abbey where Richelieu was abbot, this is a hotel all about the past. Its enclosed two-hectare park, the chaises longues that await you and the swimming pool, heated in high season, are all temptations that might almost make you forget the various nature walks in the region. Your stay will be rounded off by the superb cuisine served in the restaurant.

This is the second time that we have had the pleasure of staying at the Chateau de l'Abbaye. The Renard family was as welcoming and gracious as ever; showing us to our room, pointing out the features of the room, offering to carry our suitcase. This time we stayed in the room called Marguerite, in the main house. The room was generous in size, beautifully furnished, quiet and well illuminated by the two large windows overlooking the patio and garden. Since we were last there, a private spa has been added and the house next door has been acquired, renovated and landscaped. The grounds are very large and well maintained. There is also an outdoor pool, that we did not use, late September being a bit cool.... Dinner at the Chateau is something not to be missed. Mme Renard is a wonderful chef using fresh, local ingredients. She has passed on these skills to her daughter-in-law who is now sharing the cooking. M. Renard is sommelier and very knowledgeable about the wines. Dinner is served by candle light in one of two beautifully furnished dining rooms. Breakfast also deserves special mention. The fresh pastries served with breakfast in the morning are delicious, if a little dangerous for the waistline as it is hard to stop at one. We will definitely be back but for longer next time as there is still so much to explore in that region full of history (War of Religions, Opposition to the French Revolution) and wonderful sites: Luçon with its cathedral (very simple), La-Tranche-sur-Mer on the seashore, La-Roche-sur-Yon (itself an old and very pretty city) with les haras de Vendee (where racehorses are bred) , Saint-Michel-en-Herm,in the heart of the Marais vendéen (drained by Dutch engineers over the years)...
